Darling Companion

In a nutshell: Woman meets dog, woman gets dog, woman loses dog, woman gets dog back...all in the jaw-dropping scenery of Utah. (But this is the world's dumbest dog!)

Third of an age-appropriate trilogy by Lawrence Kasden (the other two are "The Big Chill" and "Grand Canyon") this one was inspired by a rescue dog found in an animal shelter by Kasden and his wife. There are so many things about this film that don't reflect typical canine behavior, that I suspect Kasden hasn't had many dogs in his life.

Some of these actors have worked with Kasden before:
  • Kevin Kline ("The Extra Man") Joseph is a successful surgeon, just celebrating his older daughter's wedding during the opening scenes. He's not particularly fond of dogs....
  • Diane Keaton ("Mad Money") Beth is married to the surgeon, trying to contend with her husband's constant cell phone calls and the empty-nest syndrome. She LOVES dogs....
  • Richard Jenkins ("Eat Pray Love") Russell is the smooth operator who comes into the life of...
  • Dianne Wiest ("The Big Year") Penny who took a buy-out from her job and is investing in Russell's new English pub...warm beer in the mid-West...Hmmm...
  • Sam Shepard ("Safe House") Sheriff Morris has kidney stones.
  • Kasey (in his film debut) is Freeway, their bone of contention....
Of course the presence of this dog (and his disappearance) provide individual epiphanies for all concerned. These people seem over- privileged in an understated way, i.e., spoiled, self-centered and impractical...but educated and polite!
